New research presented at APA 2007

Just returned from vacation, which included a stop at the annual American Psychological Convention in San Francisco.

I gave a couple of talks with practical tips for communicating with your online audiences. I'll post summaries of these "how-to" presentations in the next week or two .

The APA convention program schedule was the size of a phonebook - dozens of things going on every hour, every day. Here are some highlights:

  • Perfectionists CAN be happy, as long as they don't feel humiliated if they fail to measure up to their own high standards.

  • School shooters are different from one another in many ways, but most share a common personality characteristic - cynical shyness.

  • Managing stress well can increase good cholesterol - more evidence to what we already know: It's not so much the stress, but how we interpret it and handle it that determines how we react.

  • Fad treatments for autism are on the rise. Here's a list of what DOESN'T Work.

  • Nearly 2 years after Hurricane Katrina, gulf coast kids are still suffering from trauma-related emotional problems.

  • For women in the military, the more we can help them with work-family conflict issues, the less likely they will suffer from anxiety and depression after returning home.
